How to make money online - Terms and Techniques Defined.
Getting started making money requires at least a passing knowledge of some frequently used terms and techniques. This page will not completely define each term as each requires likely a full University course to even get close, what I hope hear is to get you familiar with the term and if interested many other sites can define or expand on the concept. If you have not figured it out yet, I learn faster if I use example to explain the concepts, hope this helps you as well. These examples are made up and don't take them as hard rock truth as they only are intended to show you why things work or don't work.  The terms are in random order so don't read anything into the order.

Blogs are simply  an online web log that provides the user with facts, fiction or entertainment. Readers shouldn't accept the blog as absolute truth or scientifically proven facts as these are nothing more than the writers thoughts. Good Bloggers (Blog Writers), however build a relationship with their readers that can be turned into log term profits. A good blog topic, your time and a little work you can become a successful blogger.

Well if your here you likely know this is a website. My simple explanation of a website is any page or combination of pages using navigation creates a website. This would include Blogs, Facebook & Myspace Pages, practically anything that can be found on the internet. I won't offend you by defining "Internet".

Search Engines:
Seeing your hear and breathing I'm sure you know what a search engine is and what they do. My purpose is to expose you to some facts or hearsay about the various engines. Depending on how your wired you are either in favour of the big guy on campus "Google AKA G" or those poor cousins Yahoo/Live, Lycos, Ask, Infoseek and many more. If your truly interested in making money, you will have to get onto the band wagon and become "G" friendly. Reason being each search engine employs its own algorithm to find and rate the billion or more webpages available on the net. An algorithm is simply the process of determining what page will be displayed, factors such as domain name, page title, meta content, page content, content originality, keywords, keyword position, links, anchor links, backlinks and many more. Rest assured of one thing no one knows the bottom line algorithm as it's a closely held secret and can and is changed frequently just to keep people from manipulating the ranking system. I'll spend more time on G as they are currently number one in the search business, with some saying a 70% market share, so if you know how to work with G you will know what you need to make money.

This as explained is the grand daddy of the search engines. The best explanation I can give is from its own literature. G strives to be the number one search engine providing relevant results to every search query. The G webcrawlers or some call spiders constantly crawl the internet moving from link to link mapping all content, pages and sites so as to be able to return the best page when requested by a search. G has evolved to become the leader like it or not and many companies spend much money determining how to get top rankings in G. 100% of the G algorithm will never be known even to the G developers, best you can do is produce relevant content that G will see as original, topical and based on users habits valued. More on that later.

All the rage right now is getting the right keywords and ranking high for those words which produces better Search Engine results. A keyword as your concerned is what words are being searched in the engines. Back to the carpenter example, how would you find his website? By entering his name if you knew it, his company name, his domain name, or maybe just wing it with the term "bird house" and see what appears. All of these searches may return the company site but to make money you will focus on how to get a good search engine return on BIRD HOUSE as this provides the largest possible number of visitors. The bird house search is general enough to get many more visitors than if someone entered the carpenters name or a direct hit on the domain name, this means your now targeting people that have never heard of the carpenter or his product. More on choosing keywords later.

This is a new word and concept that likely is the most important concept to this point. Niche is the subject or area that your blog or website will expand on. If making money is your ultimate goal proper choices of your niche will be you utmost concern. Example of this would be choosing "Recipes" as your niche likely wouldn't be easy to dominate in the search engines. Similarly shooting for a quick top ranking in dinner, lunch or breakfast recipes would be competing against existing dominant webpages. However a niche page for "Bison Burgers" using Bison and Burger as your key words takes you into a much smaller subset of the recipe world. We will expand much deeper into niches later.

Rank or Ranking.
Rank or ranking a website is generally based on how or where your web page or site ranks on various search engines. To make money you should have a page one rank and strive for a top 3-5 listing on that first page. How many times have you gone to the second or third pages while looking for a website? To give you the best site traffic we will be teaching you how to structure your site, how to use keywords and how to get links pointing to your site and topic ensuring a well placed rank. Detailed explanation later.

Traffic, Good Traffic - Bad Traffic.
Traffic is simply the amount of customers, readers attending your site. Is there such as a thing as bad traffic? Yes, search engines track plenty of statistics including something called bounce-back which is those visitors who choose to go to your site and immediately back out shortly after, obviously meaning they weren't satisfied with their experience. If the search engines see this pattern you will loose your rank and be placed lower than those who can hold or refer the viewers on ward to another link. Haven't we all been taken to a site promising a page we are looking for only to have our experience bombarded with ads, pop-ups, pop-unders thankfully our search providers are now weeding these nuisance sites and lately you have to look really hard to find one.

Links are a way to navigate within your site or to another website, they can be outgoing or incoming. Internal links allow your visitors to navigate between your pages, the goal should be to make your site as browsing friendly as possible for both your viewers and the web crawlers. Out bound links should be to related topics otherwise the search engines may treat your site as not relevant on the keyword topic. If your site has a "Bison Burger Recipe" and your out going link is to your favourite hard rock band, you've confused not only your viewers but the crawlers who analyze content for indexing. Other terms such as Juice, Follow, No-Follow, Anchor Link will be examined in closer detail later.

Adwords - Adsense:
Adwords and Adsense are the related advertising programs operated by "G". Adwords is "G's" arm that solicits advertising from companies big and small, takes orders as to where and how the ads should appear and negotiates a fee for their service. Adsense on the other hand is their wing that assists you the web developer/ blog writer with getting paid by allowing ad content on your website/ blog. "G" has refined their software to the point of placing relevant content on each page. Meaning if you were talking about your "Bison Burger Recipe" and if "G" had a Bison rancher or grill manufacture wanting to advertise, these type of ads would appear on your page. If in your content or narrative on the recipe you spoke of a special "Paul Newman Hot Sauce" you may even get that ad as well. This topic will be examined fully later.

Affiliate Marketing and Marketers:
Affiliate Marketing is what "G" is the number one at, however many other companies have emerged to attempt at getting into this market. As you saw with Adwords - Adsense a company charges the advertiser and pays the provider of course keeping an undisclosed fee for providing this service. In addition to these affiliate marketers many major companies are starting their own affiliate programs check out Amazon.com or Walmart.com  Getting paid for your work is always number one so you will have to choose what and who you want to work for. Here's another technique closer to working for yourself but it carry's a little more risk. Imagine the Bird House Carpenter has a website, obscure page 10 rank, you find it do a little promotion on a blog with a little work get your blog #1 for searches for the Keywords "Custom Birdhouses". On your blog have an outgoing no-follow link to the carpenters website, drive some buying traffic to his site, eventually he will be feeling good about all this extra business. Now you can either contact him and ask if he got any extra sales in the past month and how much it would be worth to keep this business or just cut off or redirect the traffic to a second provider waiting for your first carpenter to contact you. Feels good when people call you for your services and when you request a fee for this service your much more likely to be paid. Companies are and rightfully suspicious with people contacted them offering help so provide a service before making the sales pitch. Affiliate Marketing will be discussed at length later.
